During this workshop, participants were shown how to carry out a basic dimensional survey of a part of the building that they found interesting and would like to investigate in more detail. Measurements were taken using measuring tapes or by pacing out longer distances (each pace being the equivalent of around one metre). Floor plans (aerial views) were drawn first and then important vertical dimensions were recorded, such as window and door openings.
The drawings were made directly onto sheets of cardboard at a scale of 1:25, i.e. actual distances were divided by 25 to produce a scaled down version suitable for the model. The participants then cut out the floor plan and walls and glued them together to form models of their chosen spaces.
